General Information The volan is a nightmare made real. No carnivore can live without meat, and he will prey on any possible source, including people. Blood is their water, and they are always thirsty. His head and body are canine in origin, most like a wolf or fox. He has no forelegs, replacing them with leathery wings thumbed by a single claw each. The back legs are strong, also canid, but are tipped with long, finger-like toes that grasp prey. This creature can be from six to eleven feet tall depending on rank. His fur is thick, and rarely light in color, for night is his ally on the hunt. An open muzzle reveals his sharp teeth and lengthy, flexible tongue that he can use to lap up the blood of fallen victims. His eyes seem to glow in the dark. This means that he can actually see better in the light of day. A volan's pupils change from a sharp slit to a circle, much like a cat. His ears are pointed, though they don't always sit straight up. Some are naturally pointed to the sides, and rarely, downward. They swivel to hear the smallest sounds, and shift backward to signal mood or submissive behavior. A volan is nothing without his nose, which he uses to seek prey in collaboration with his sensitive ears. This beast isn't often seen alone. He travels in a pack that consists of four or more in the wild. His home is near the mountains. Colors and patterns mix and slosh across genders and ranks, varying as much as his resemblance to any wild canine species. Should a volan approach, no matter the size, it isn't wise to stare him in the face. This creature is prone to violence, whether he likes a person or not. The only safety around one can be found in a bonded volan, though it isn't a guarantee. If not the claws or fangs, his voice is enough to shatter glass once angered. Every volan is capable of barking as a pup, and mixing the sound with a screech as he grows older. He can howl at any age, though it grows more haunting over time. Ranks are determined by strength, rather than by a certain look. Height can definitely play a role, but not always. The pack will know each member's role by the time they wander out of the nest for the first time. After that, it may as well be set in stone. He is capable of poor mindspeech, often being confused by pronouns and tense. Mating Information The female will stand on a high peak and fluff her fur, shuddering to release loose fur into the air. Her scent goes with it. Next, she will scream into the air, the sound falling on any volan ear within a six mile radius. Once males begin to arrive, she will take off into the sky and circle her potential suitors while they fight for her. The strongest will have the honor of disappearing into the night with her. Bonding Information Volantil are born from eggs, only a couple of feet from nose to tail. The mother will signal when she believes her young are ready. It occurs once the pups are hatched and they begin to stalk around. People must remain approximately ten feet from the nest itself, and not touch any baby until bonded to, as the mother considers them hers alone until then. She will maul an overeager bonding participant. When ready, a baby will wander over to a person, nose out front. Pups can seek almost anything in a potential bond. They will use their wings as forelegs until old enough to stand. It won't, however, keep the pups from bouncing and howling in celebration once they find a bond! Succube 5* None shall defy the queen. She can be as tall as ten feet, but height should not deceive you. Smaller queens have been observed, and are no less deadly. She is the strongest and most aggressive of her clan. In the wild, she is the only female of her pack to mate. Once chased, she will lay anywhere from four to eight eggs. Incubo 3* He is usually massive, pushing eleven feet in height. Besides his queen, no other volan questions his authority. He enforces his orders and wants with very little mercy. Should any challenge him, including his bonded, he will not stop short of physical harm. He is the only male to mate in the wild, and will be more prone to violence toward lower ranks wishing to chase. Fantasma 2* These volantil come in male and female. As an exception to normal volantil coloring, they only come in pale colors. They have the very last rank in the pack, and never grow larger than nine feet when standing. These volantil are incredibly rare. Their attitudes are most submissive, but may still take advantage of their bonded. Females may lay one to three eggs in a scrambled mess of a nest. Vuota 1* She remains close to the succube, in order to help raise pups in the wild. When bonded, she finds herself the guardian of younger and smaller creatures. Her height can reach nine feet. The vuota is a purely female rank. She is the mothering kind, but is the least fertile, only able to lay one egg at a time in a fortified nest. Mostri 1* These are males and females that tend to reach ten feet and over. They are still capable of terrible actions, but tend to use less thinking than other ranks. In the wild, they are often given the most difficult tasks requiring brute strength. Bonded mostri are usually good for intimidation, but can be outsmarted easily. Females can lay two to four eggs in a nest of dirt. Zanne 1* The zanne are those individuals unable to fit other ranks. Both male and female, their sizes can reach ten feet, but often do not. Their personalities have the most variation, though violence doesn't escape them. In the wild, they obey their lord and queen without question. Whether they will be obedient to a bonded or not is undetermined until said bond takes place. Females can lay one to three eggs in a nest of things they find pleasant.
